The single most valuable thing to know before you borrow
Zimbabwe's business-credit market has an enormous price gap, and which side of it you land on is usually decided by paperwork rather than economics.
| Lender | What it publishes | Cost of US$10,000 for a year* |
|---|---|---|
| FBC Bank (commercial bank) | 18% per annum minimum lending rate (FCA/USD) | ≈ US$1,800 |
| FBC Microfinance (same group) | 5%–12% per month | ≈ US$6,000 – US$14,400 |
*Illustrative, charged flat on the original amount, to show the scale of the difference.
Same group, different entity, and the microfinance route can cost three to eight times the bank route for identical money. That is not a scandal — it is risk pricing, because a microfinance lender serves businesses a bank declines. But it produces one unavoidable instruction:
Apply to a commercial bank first, even if you expect to be declined. The application tells you whether the cheap door is open, and an afternoon spent finding out is the highest-return hour in this entire process.
What the rest of the market discloses
- CABS SME Loan — US$5,000–US$50,000 over 36 months, the longest runway available; rate is quote-only;
- Stanbic — the widest product range, plus a EUR20 million EIB Global concessional credit line for SMEs and women entrepreneurs. Ask about it by name: development-backed facilities are chronically under-claimed because eligible businesses never think to ask;
- Ecobank — a US$15 million Afreximbank SME Finance Facility for export value chains (agribusiness, manufacturing, healthcare, logistics). "Value chain" is broader than most owners assume — if you supply, process, transport or service an exporter, describe your position and let them assess it;
- NMB — short-cycle facilities up to 6 months (order finance, invoice discounting, overdrafts). Rates are reported "up to 65%" with no stated time period. Per annum that is expensive but normal; per month it would be catastrophic — a roughly twelvefold difference from one missing word. Ask which it is, in writing, before anything else.

Match the instrument to the need
Using the wrong facility is one of the most expensive mistakes an SME makes — often costlier than negotiating the rate:
- Invoice discounting — you have delivered and invoiced; borrow against money already owed. Priced substantially on your customer's reliability, which is an advantage if you supply a strong buyer;
- Order finance / working capital — a confirmed order needs stock. Self-liquidating: a specific event repays it on a known date;
- Asset or equipment finance — the asset secures the borrowing, so the structure matches its life;
- Term loan — multi-year expansion repaid from future earnings;
- Overdraft — genuine short timing gaps only. An overdraft you sit at permanently is a term loan wearing a friendly name, and priced worse.
The classic error: funding a long-lived asset with short working capital. Repayment arrives long before the asset has earned it back, and the business is squeezed.
Do the margin arithmetic on the deal, not the facility
On short-cycle borrowing the decisive test is not the rate — it is whether the transaction's margin exceeds the finance cost. Write it down:
If a job yields US$2,000 of profit and three months of financing costs US$900, you have handed 45% of the job to the lender. Sometimes that is worth it — to win a customer, keep a line running, or establish a track record. Often it is not. The businesses that use credit well run that calculation on every deal.
And whatever you are quoted: get the total amount repayable in US dollars, in writing, including all fees and any compulsory insurance. Then ask what early settlement saves — on short, high-rate facilities that right is worth real money.
What decides whether you qualify
Banks decline businesses for paperwork at least as often as for economics. Before applying:
- Be properly registered — see registering a company in Zimbabwe;
- Be current on tax — see business taxes in Zimbabwe. VAT is 15.5%; VAT and PAYE you collect are not your money;
- Have clean bank statements. A separate business account is what makes them exist — see our bank-account comparison and the side-business money guide;
- Check the lender is on the RBZ register — how to verify a lender.
Budget for IMTT at 2% on drawdown and supplier payments too — on US$20,000 of monthly payments that is about US$400. It rewards fewer, larger transfers; model it in the IMTT calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What rate should I put in the calculator?
Whatever you have been quoted in writing — and confirm whether it is monthly or annual, because the difference is roughly twelvefold. Exploring without a quote? Test both 18% p.a. (the best published bank minimum) and a monthly-rate scenario to see the range.
Why is microfinance so much more expensive than a bank?
Different risk appetites. Banks lend against stronger security and stricter criteria; microfinance lenders serve borrowers who do not clear that bar and price for it. Always test the bank first.
How do I access the concessional facilities?
Ask the bank directly and by name — the Stanbic/EIB SME line, or Ecobank's Afreximbank export facility — and request their terms alongside standard pricing, in writing. They are not usually offered unprompted.
Does limited liability protect me personally?
Often less than owners assume: lenders routinely require personal guarantees from directors of small companies. Ask whether one is required before you sign.
Should I borrow to grow?
Reinvested profit and faster collections are safer growth. Borrow against a confirmed order or issued invoice — a specific event on a known date — rather than against hoped-for sales.
Lender figures are as published by each institution (FBC Bank's Business Operating Conditions, FBC Microfinance's product page, and the EIB/Afreximbank facility announcements); NMB's reported rate lacks a stated period in the source available to us.
