The minimum payment is the trap
The calculator above shows how long a balance takes to clear and what it costs. The number most people never see is what happens when you pay only the minimum.
Minimum payments are calculated as a small percentage of the balance, which means they fall as the balance falls — so the debt stretches out for years while interest accumulates. Paying the minimum is not slow progress; it is close to standing still, deliberately designed that way.
Test it yourself: run your balance with a minimum-style payment, then again with a fixed amount slightly higher, and compare the total interest and the time to clear. The difference is usually startling — and it is entirely within your control.
The rule that clears debt fastest
Pay a fixed amount every month, and never let it fall as the balance falls. If you can pay US$150 this month, keep paying US$150 next month even though the required minimum has dropped. That single habit is what converts a revolving balance into a debt with an end date.
Two supporting rules:
- Stop adding to the balance while you clear it. Paying down a card you are still spending on is the most common reason people feel they are getting nowhere;
- Attack the most expensive debt first. If you carry several, list every one with its total repayable and target the highest rate — the debt payoff planner sequences it for you.
Where this fits in Zimbabwe's credit market
Card debt is expensive, but it is worth knowing what it competes with here. Zimbabwean consumer lenders publish rates reaching 20% per month, with a 228% APR ceiling elsewhere in the market — while a commercial bank publishes 18% per annum in USD.
That matters for one specific decision: never clear a card with a more expensive facility. Consolidating card debt into monthly-rate microfinance credit makes the position worse, not better, even though the instalment may look smaller. Check the total repayable on both before moving anything — see our personal-loans comparison and how payroll loans really work.
The costs around the repayment
- IMTT at 2% applies to electronic payments, so paying your card in several instalments through the month costs more tax than paying once. One payment per month — see the IMTT calculator;
- Fees and charges — annual fees, late-payment charges, cash-advance fees. Ask for the full schedule; cash advances in particular are usually charged differently and more expensively than purchases;
- Currency. Confirm which currency the balance and repayments are in, and whether any conversion applies — see ZiG vs USD explained.
Once it is clear, keep it clear
The reason most cleared balances come back is that nothing changed underneath. A card balance usually starts with an unexpected cost — a repair, a medical bill, a school fee — that there was no buffer for.
So the follow-through is an emergency fund. Even US$100 blocks the small shocks that restart the cycle, and in a market where credit can cost 20% a month, that buffer is the highest-return financial product available to an ordinary household.
Frequently asked questions
What rate should I enter?
Use your card's actual rate from your statement or agreement — and confirm whether it is quoted monthly or annually. If you are unsure, ask the issuer for the total you would repay at your current payment level.
Is it better to pay off the card or save?
Build a small buffer first (even US$100), then attack the card hard, then rebuild savings properly. Clearing expensive debt is a guaranteed return no savings account matches — Zimbabwean savings accounts publish roughly 1%–3.5% a year.
Should I consolidate my debts?
Only into something genuinely cheaper, measured on total repayable. Consolidating into monthly-rate credit is how manageable debt becomes unmanageable.
Will paying it off help my credit record?
A settled account reads very differently from an outstanding one — and get written confirmation of settlement. See how to check your credit report, because listings frequently stay stale until someone chases them.
What if I genuinely cannot pay?
Speak to the issuer before you default rather than after. Arrangements are far easier to negotiate when you initiate them, and interest keeps accruing while you wait.
